Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to Speak at Chautauqua

Mount Vernon - There are two reasons for the popularity and significance of Longfellow's poetry. First, he had the gift of easy rhyme. He wrote poetry as a bird sings, with natural grace and melody. Second, he is easily understood and he was the first major American poet to use themes about America.

But if “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere” is the only thing you know about Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, then the upcoming Chautauqua featuring Robert Bennett [retired professor of the classics from Kenyon College] will fill in a lot of the facts of the man’s influence, talent, and tragic life. Why do we still like his poetry? Come and find out.

Robert Bennett will be making his second appearance [he did Walt Whitman last year] as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow as part of the Chautauqua Series presented by Elixir Presents, the Ohio Humanities Council, Rolls-Royce Charities/Civic Fund and Ariel Foundation, at ThePlace@TheWoodward (111 S. Main Street in downtown Mount Vernon) on March 28. Doors open at this first floor facility at 6 PM and program starts at 7 PM.

Opening this program that is presented on a donation basis is the Last Saturday Café Band made up of Sarah Goslee Reed, Desmond Wall, Skip Trask, Bill Miller and Mike Petee playing a variety of original material they showcase at the regular feature at ThePlace@TheWoodward on thelast Saturday each month [except this month as several members are taking part in the Knox Squares fundraiser for Hope Now on March 30 – join them again  April 27th ].
