WWII Journalist Edward R. Murrow To Speak at Chautauqua
MOUNT VERNON - Edward R. Murrow brought rooftop reports of the Blitz of London into America's living rooms before this country entered World War II. After the war, Murrow and his team of reporters brought news to the new medium of television. On his legendary CBS weekly show, Murrow took on Sen. Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee. His life was brought to life in the 2005 movie “Good Night and Good Luck” that received 6 Oscar nominations.
On Thursday December 5, Ken Hammontree will bring Murrow to life for the Chautauqua audience at the Grand Hotel (12 Public Square in downtown Mount Vernon). Doors will open to this donation based program at 6 PM and the program will start at 7 PM with an Old Time Radio Show presented by the Mount Vernon Players and then Ken Hammontree as Edward R. Murrow. At the end of Ken’s program he will entertain questions from the audience in character.
The Chautauqua Series presents donation based Living History programs every month year round. These programs are family friendly, a great way to learn more about history and enhance students learning. The Grand Hotel is fully accessible to those with special needs such as wheelchairs, walkers and strollers. The Series is organized and presented by Elixir Presents and supported by a grant from the Ariel Foundation. It is also supported by the Grand Hotel and PKAC. All donations received go directly to the opening acts and featured performers.
