Chautauqua/Lyceum Features Dorothy Parker
Mount Vernon –Stepping out from her usual role as an amazing accordion player and discussing the Klezmer musical style, Marian Funk makes her debut was featured lecturer, discussing the importance of the life and work of Dorothy Parker. This will be the final program at ThePlace@TheWoodward’s current location, 111 S. Main Street in downtown Mount Vernon [the next Chautauqua, Woody Hayes on November 20 will occur at the new location of ThePlace@TheWoodward, next door to the Alcove Restaurant, 120 S. Main Street].
Who was Dorothy Parker? Dorothy was a poet, short story writer, critic and satirist, best known for her wit, wisecracks, and eye for 20th-century urban foibles. She was a founding member of the Algonquin Round Table. Following the breakup of the circle, Parker traveled to Hollywood to pursue screenwriting and received two Academy Award nominations. Dismissive of her own talents, she deplored her reputation as a "wisecracker". Nevertheless, her literary output and reputation for her sharp wit have endured. She also has served as a role model for women in that she competed head to head with a male dominated field and although black listed for her politics, did not buckle under as did many of her male counterparts.
Opening the program will be Noah Shull, performing Blues guitar selections of the era. The Dorothy Parker Lyceum will start with Noah at 7 PM, with Marian Funk’s discussion starting at approximately 7:45 PM. These Chautauqua/Lyceums are brought to you in association with support in part by the Rolls-Royce Charities/Civic Fund and Ariel Foundation and are presented on a donation basis.
The final program for the 8th season of the Chautauqua/Lyceum Series will be Woody Hayes on November 20 and we’d like to announce the Chautauqua Series will be presenting another concert to help raise food and funds for the annual Food For The Hungry drive. The concert will be called Foodstock: Summer of Love/Winter of Hope, featuring music of the ‘60’s and ’70’s and a musical tribute to Creedence Clearwater Revival. Information on the 2015 Chautauqua Series will be announced soon.
