MOUNT VERNON - Pauline Esther Friedman, nicknamed "Popo", was the youngest of four sisters and grew up in Sioux City. One sister was an identical twin, Esther Pauline Friedman, who later became the columnist Ann Landers. Writing under the pen name Abigail Van Buren, Pauline began the "Dear Abby" column in 1956. During her decades writing the column, it became the most widely-syndicated newspaper column in the world, syndicated in 1,400 newspapers around the world with 110 million of readers.
Susan Kahrl, making her yearly performance on the Chautauqua stage, takes on the first person portrayal of America’s favorite advice columnist. Susan has portrayed Erma Bombeck, Victoria Woodhull and Carrie Nation in the past and received glowing reviews for those performances and with the amount of research required to give a well-rounded view of these historical persons, another wonderful evening is awaiting us on Thursday April 25 at ThePlace@TheWoodward (111 S. Main Street in downtown Mount Vernon) at 7 PM.
Opening the program will be Lou Borcher, the talented entertainer, who has graced the Chautauqua stage in the past as well and he will present a program of songs that will complement the appearance of America’s sweet heart, Dear Abby.
Elixir with support from the Ohio Humanities Council, Rolls-Royce Charity/Civics Fund and the Ariel Foundation present the only monthly Chautauqua in the United States, right here in Knox County. The doors at ThePlace@TheWoodward open at 6 PM, Lou Borcher performs at 7 PM and Susan Kahrl will take the stage as Abigail Van Buren at about 7:45. There will be a question and answer period right after Susan’s performance. This program is presented on a donation basis so you already have your ticket.
