MOUNT VERNON – Although today, many know her as George Clooney’s aunt, Rosemary Clooney was an amazing songstress with 51 albums. Born in Maysville, Kentucky, she and her sister won a spot singing on WLW in Cincinnati. From there she recorded with Tony Pastor’s Big Band, scored her first major hit as a solo act, “Come On-a My House”, a song she passionately disliked and from then on always seemed to be edged out of winning Grammies due to being up against a singer named Tony Bennett. Oh, and by the way, she was Bing Crosby’s love interest in the movie “White Christmas.” And, she did win a Primetime Emmy when she guest starred on “ER” with her nephew George Clooney.
On Thursday August 25 at 7 PM at ThePlace@TheWoodward (now at its new location S. Main Street in downtown Mount Vernon), the Chautauqua Series presents Chris Petee. As one of the organizers of the Chautauqua Series, and a talented singer and actor in her own right, this program marks her debut doing the research, organizing her mix of songs and stories as the inimitable Rosemary Clooney. Due to the mix of music and stories, this Chautauqua will not have an opening act and will be all Rosie.
The Chautauqua Series, now in its 10th season, is the only year round monthly Chautauqua in the United States, and its right here in Mount Vernon, Ohio. The programs are organized by the members of the local area musical and entertainment group, Elixir and supported in part by a grant from the Ariel Foundation. The Series is presented on a donation basis with all monies collected going to the performers on stage.
