Queen of Gospel Song Writers to Speak at Chautauqua
MOUNT VERNON - Consider if you will, a woman born in 1820, becoming blind at the age of 6 weeks old and being raised in a humble household. What would you say were her chances of not only surviving to live 95 years but to write over 8000 hymns and gospel songs with over 100 million copies printed, be the first woman to speak to the Senate, become national known for her preaching abilities and by the end of the 19th century be a household name in America?
On Thursday August 29 you can meet the person behind this amazing story when Elixir’s Chautauqua Series continues at ThePlace@TheWoodward (111 S. Main Street in downtown Mount Vernon). The woman in question was named Fanny Crosby and will be portrayed in first person living history format by Raylene Hlavaty. Raylene will discuss her life and include musical selections in her presentation.
The program is presented by Elixir, who organizes and volunteers their time, to bring quality educational and entertainment of historical importance to our community and thanks to grant aid from the Ohio Humanities Council, Ariel Foundation and the Rolls-Royce Charities/Civic Fund make these programs available to everyone on a donation basis. All the monies raised in donations go to the performers who come from local talent to statewide portrayers.
This presentation at ThePlace@TheWoodward will start at 7 PM, doors open at 6 PM, and this is a first floor facility that is accessible to those with special needs such as those with wheel chairs, walkers or strollers. These programs are family friendly and bringing children and students is encouraged.
