Chautauqua Journeys with Lewis and Clark

Between May 1804 and September 1806, 31 men, one woman, and a baby traveled from the plains of the Midwest to the shores of the Pacific Ocean. They called themselves the Corps of Discovery. In their search for a water route to the Pacific Ocean, they opened a window into the west for the young United States.  Lewis and Clark's great journey begins in Washington D.C. and zigzags along the eastern seaboard encompassing the states of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania; then through Ohio, West Virginia,Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri. The trail meanders through the great plains of Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota  through the mountains and the valleys of Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, concluding at the Pacific Ocean, covered over 4,600 miles and showcases some of the most beautiful and rugged areas of America.

Take a guided tour of the trail with John Sproat on Thursday July 31 at ThePlace@TheWoodward [111 S. Main Street in downtown Mount Vernon]. Doors open at 6 PM at this first floor facility that is easily accessible for people with special needs and the program starts at 7 PM.

Opening the program will be a 30 minute musical journey with Elixir and then a travelogue of the trip taken by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. This program is part of the 8th season of the Chautauqua Series presented by Elixir and supported in part by Ariel Foundation and Rolls-Royce Charities/Civic Fund and is presented on a donation basis with all monies going to the performers.

Mount Vernon – Peter Daly was a first class passenger on the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic. He remembers when the ship struck the iceberg and that the band played until the very end. According to his later accents Daly remained on deck as long as possible. As he helped a female passenger over the side he was washed off the deck by a wave that rolled along the boat deck. He then swam in the water before being picked up by a collapsible boat and taken to New York aboard the RMS Carpathia.

On Thursday July 17 hear the fascinating story of the greatest ship wreck in history by a man who was there. Portraying Peter Daly will be Roscoe Village Historian Christopher Hart, a veteran of the Chautauqua Series. Opening the program will be the Mount Vernon Players presenting a recreation of a classic radio show from the golden age of radio.

The Chautauqua Series, in its 8th season, presented as a donation basis is a fun, educational and entertaining evening for the whole family brought to the community by Elixir and support from Rolls-Royce Charities/Civic Fund and Ariel Foundation.  Doors open of ThePlace@TheWoodward (111 S. Main St in downtown Mount Vernon) at 6 PM and program starts at 7 PM. The facility is a first floor facility and accessible for people with special needs.
