Chautauqua Series Welcomes Jonathan Winters

Mount Vernon - He began comedy routines and acting while studying at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. He was also a local radio personality on WING (mornings, 6 to 8) in Dayton, and at WIZE in Springfield, Ohio. He performed on WBNS-TV in Columbus, for two and a half years, quitting the station in 1953 when they refused to give him a $5 raise. Born in Bellbrook, Ohio and passing away April 11, 2013, Jonathan Winters became an icon of the entertainment industry.

This coming Thursday, June 27th, as part of the Elixir Chautauqua Series, Ken Barnett will portray Jonathan and anyone who missed his amazing performance as Red Skelton will not want to miss this portrayal. Opening the evening will be Chris Petee with Jim Frady, Bill Miller and Skip Trask performing songs made famous by Rosemary Clooney.

The program will be presented at ThePlace@TheWoodward (111 S. Main Street in downtown Mount Vernon) and it is a donation based event, aided by the generosity of partial grants from the Ohio Humanities Council, Ariel Foundation and Rolls-Royce Charities/Civic Fund. Doors open at 6 PM and program starts at 7 PM, ending with a questions and answers period between the audience and Jonathan.

Last Saturday Café & Sips Team Up

Mount Vernon – The newly minted Owl Creek musicians, including Sarah Goslee Reed, Alison Cline, Bill Miller, Skip Trask, Noah Shull and Mike Petee are teaming up with Sips Coffeehouse and Deli  [101 S. Main Street in downtown Mount Vernon]to bring this month’s Last Saturday Café  to an actual coffeehouse.

The members of Owl Creek have been presenting a program of relaxing and entertaining new music you cannot hear anywhere else, on a monthly basis at ThePlace@TheWoodward since early this year. Band member Mike Petee indicated, “We are musicians from the general area of Owl Creek, the name used for this area when white settlers came here. We all bring different musical backgrounds, tastes, experiences, musical instruments and writing abilities to the mix and are trying to create a new musical sound that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.”

The group have been performing and evolving by presenting; in association with the Chautauqua Series and the Ohio Humanities Council and Ariel Foundation, a donation basis monthly event to provide the area with another family friendly entertainment opportunity to the area. “We want to give an alternative to bars, clubs and concerts, to those who wish to enjoy an evening out and not stay out late or go to the above venues. It’s a chance to relax and have something unique to experience from talented people right here in the Knox County and surrounding communities,” continued Petee.

So this month, the Last Saturday Café will team with Sips to present an evening with Owl Creek on Saturday June 30 from 6 -8 PM. Donations  for the musicians are welcome and coffee, tea and goodies will be available. For more information contact: 740-393-8712 or 740-392-2233.

And from Sarah Goslee Reed: Lastly (pun intended), the Last Saturday Cafe will take place on June 29.  We have changed the venue and time - we will be at Sips, 101 South Main St. from 6 - 8 pm -  earlier than previously, so you can have a little daylight left to take an evening walk.

Travel the
Underground Railroad

Mount Vernon – Imagine what it would feel like to
be a slave? Imagine hearing about something called the Underground Railroad that would provide you with freedom, IF, you made it through hostile territory and
alluded bounty hunters and well-knowing that if you were caught you’d be whipped and beaten, even more than usual. Would you take the risk?

Bob Ford, writer, musician, historian, will visit the
Chautauqua/Lyceum Series on Thursday June 13 and take you on that imaginary trip and will you might see, hear, feel and imagine, going along the route. As part of the series presented by Elixir and supported in part by The Ohio Humanities Council, Ariel Foundation and Rolls-Royce Charities/Civic Fund, Bob will act as your conductor, based on a real person who helped slaves reach Canada and freedom in the 1800’s.

Bob will transport the audience back in time and let you
experience the real Underground Railroad and your ticket price is a donation.

The event will take place at ThePlace@TheWoodward (111 S. Main Street in historic downtown Mount Vernon, Ohio) on June 13 at 7 PM, doors open at 6 PM.

Don’t forget, Jonathan Winters Chautauqua on June 27.
