Uncle Tom’s Cabin Author to Speak at Chautauqua
Mount Vernon – Urban legend indicates that President Abraham Lincoln met Harriet Beecher Stowe and said, “So this is the little lady who wrote the book that started this great big war.” Did the President Lincoln really say that? Ask Harriet this coming Thursday, April 30 at 7 PM at ThePlace@TheWoodward (120 S. Main Street in downtown Mount Vernon, Ohio) as part of the 9th season of the Chautauqua Series presented by the members of Elixir with financial assistance from the Ariel Foundation.
Returning to the Chautauqua stage is Susan Kahrl, the gifted teacher, writer, actress who has portrayed Erma Bombeck, Carry Nation, Rosie the Riveter and Victoria Woodhull among others. Susan will bring Harriet Beecher Stowe to life in this first person living history presentation. Many don’t know that besides “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, Harriet wrote more than 20 books and besides her anti-slavery stand she also was an advocate for equal rights for women.
Opening the program will be traditional delta blues expert Noah Shull. Doors open for this donation based program at 6 PM, Noah performs from 7-7:30, Harriet performs starting around 7:45 and will open the floor to questions from the audience immediately after her presentation.
