Black Bart to Speak at Chautauqua
Mount Vernon – Can you name any famous stagecoach robbers from the Old West? Time’s up! No, not Jesse James or Billy the Kid.  Jesse was more into robbing banks and Billy liked to ride in stagecoaches but never robbed one. Actually the most famous stagecoach robber was Charles Earl Bowles. Who? Bowles was better known as Black Bart. If the name sort of sounds familiar but you’re not sure why, Elixir invites you to attend the next presentation in the popular Chautauqua Series on Thursday March 31 at ThePlace@TheWoodward  [120 S. Main Street in downtown Mount Vernon].

Black Bart will be portrayed by Jim Stoner, a veteran of the Chautauqua stage.  Jim will give a first person living history evening sharing the daring exploits of a person we might have heard of but don’t know very much about.  Opening the program will be the entertaining folk musician, storyteller and historian, Bob Ford. The program is presented on a donation basis and doors open at this first floor theater at 6 PM. The program starts at 7 PM with Bob Ford, then Black Bart and finally Q&A with the Black Bart.

         Commodore Perry to Visit 

Mount Vernon - What was the Battle of Lake Erie? Some might remember it was during the War of 1812, some might remember the famous slogan “Don’t give up the Ship” being said, but most don’t realize that the victory by Commodore Perry was a turning point in the war with England and lead to the United States retaining rights to the states of Ohio and Michigan.

Want to learn more? Come and listen to the story this Thursday, March 10 as Ken Hammontree returns to portray Oliver Hazard Perry at ThePlace@TheWoodward TheWoodward (120 S. Main Street in historic downtown Mount Vernon) as part of the 10th season of the Chautauqua Series.
The only year round monthly Chautauqua (first person living history presentations) in the United States is held right here in Knox County and open to everyone in our community on a donation basis.

Doors open at this first floor theater at 6 PM, the program starts at 7 PM with a visit from local musical chameleons, Elixir, followed by Ken Hammontree’s presentation as the Commodore then a Q&A with the Commodore.
